Creating an Acne Diet that Works for You

An acne diet is a very interesting idea. Hasn’t everybody heard that chocolate will give you pimples? We almost all have. If you think about it its not so far-fetched that by watching your diet you could prevent acne.

Nevertheless, a good acne diet is not easy to develop. It is highly personal and based on your body’s unique responses to food. There are rules to follow, but progress is usually by trial and error. Check your skin thoroughly every day. Make note of any changes. You might even want to take pictures using a digital camera once or twice a week. If and when your skin clears, stick to the diet that you were using at that time.

The following are some easy guidelines to help get you started on an acne diet:

1. Increase your protein intake. Many dermatologists are under the belief that protein is connected with clearer skin. This is because protein contains an enzyme that limits the production of oil. Oily skin has always been susceptible to breakouts.

2. Carbohydrates are not good. You do not need to cut out carbs completely. But you do need to limit them so that they are only about 40 percent of your diet. This is because carbohydrates have compounds in them that can stimulate oil production. This is why junk food has a reputation for causing acne. In reality junk food just has a high carb content.

3. Try to drink green tea. If at all possible try to drink the real stuff. The best type of green tea is the kind that you brew. However, if you can’t stand the stuff, then natural green tea drinks will do. Green tea will restrain the production of androgen. Breakouts can be caused by the hormone called androgen.

4. Try to limit the amount of salt you intake. Salt most always contains iodine. This is why table salt is usually called “iodized salt.” Iodine is a major inflammatory agent in those with acne.

While watching what you eat, you should also be very careful with what you put on your face. You already know what is in your beauty products if you have acne. Use oil free moisturizers and organic skin care products. These are least likely to cause a breakout. If you wear makeup you may want to consider switching over to mineral makeup. If you want to enhance your acne diet and reduce breakouts, you may want to try mineral makeup.
